Dark Grey Welsh wool
Dark Grey Welsh wool
We use the yarn from the Black Welsh Mountain (which gives our darker shades) and the Welsh Mountain (the oatmeal colour) sheep breeds. When we started out the Black Welsh was on the endangered breeds list. Now, having as it does, a commercial future it is abundant in England and Wales. Its natural properties are perfect for the outdoor life: Warmth, comfort, durability, strength and beauty. But it also has the advantage of being naturally oiled which means it shrugs off dirt and makes it water resistant. Wool has protected man from the elements for centuries and it is no surprise that even with the development of man made fibres over the last few decades that it is now enjoying a strong resurgence.

Washing instructions are printed on the back of every garment label. We recommend the following procedure:
- Hand-wash in luke warm water using a suitable mild detergent.
- Rinse well in luke warm water and squeeze out excess water.
- To retain the oil in the wool add a few drops of oil (olive, baby) to the final rinse.
- Carefully spin out the remaining water and lay out flat to dry.
- Please do not hang it up or Tumble Dry
I’ve made three Aran sweaters from this yarn, and will make more. I absolutely love it. It’s soft, but very durable and has a lovely sheen.
I ordered a couple skeins of the natural dark grey wool to knit mittens for my dad. He showed me a Black Sheep sweater he bought in England many years ago (we’re from the US) that he still loves and, on a whim, I looked up the company and—lo! And behold!—I could purchase yarn from them. Exciting! I was initially confused by the skeins when they arrived, as the website states it knits as aran weight but the strands are very fine, like a lace weight. A quick email to customer service cleared this up for me—the balls are wound with three strands that are to be knit together. Eureka! 😁 I started the mittens using 3.25 mm needles and it’s producing a lovely fabric—the three strands are not a problem to knit with and it feels wonderful in my hands. My dad will love them. So, to sum up:
Wool/yarn quality: Excellent
Customer service: Excellent
I highly recommend!
